Survey of Recent Geoscience Graduates, 2026

Congratulations on completing your degree. The American Geosciences Institute has conducted surveys of new geoscience graduates over the last decade. We would appreciate your cooperation in completing the survey so the geoscience community can better understand your experiences in earning your degree and your current plans for next steps.

Purpose:
You are invited to participate in a study looking at the immediate career paths of students exiting college with a geosciences degree. This study is being conducted by the American Geosciences Institute (AGI). You have been asked to complete this survey because you are about to graduate with your bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in a geosciences field.

Procedure:
This survey will be administered using this online instrument. If you agree to participate in this study, we will ask you to fill out this online survey to the best of your ability. It should take approximately 20 minutes of your time.

Risks:
There are no foreseeable risks for participating in this study, but some potential minimal risk includes the time spent completing the survey and the risk of breach of confidentiality.

Benefits:
While there may not be any immediate benefits for you as participants, there would be indirect benefits. This research will provide vital information for the geosciences community about scope of education of new graduate, the alignment with employer expectations, and the current experiences and background of new graduates that can help the community to better serve early career geoscientists.

Confidentiality:
All the data collected from this study will be housed in a secure database. The only people that will have access to the data will be the employees of AGI’s Geoscience Profession Program, all of whom are part of the project team. We will keep your identity and the information you supply private. Toward the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to share your responses with your department, and your information will only be shared with your department if you give explicit permission to do so. Otherwise, we will not share your personal information with anyone outside the project team. The only instance—and such occasions are rare—when we would release information about you to anyone without your permission would be if we were required to do so by law, such as a subpoena or if we learned someone was in danger of harm.

Voluntary Participation:
Participation in this study is voluntary. You can decide to not participate or to discontinue your participation at any time without penalty.
